Manchester United has managed to salvage a season that seemed destined for disaster just months ago. Ruben Amorim’s departure left the team in a deep sporting and emotional crisis, far from European qualification spots, with the dressing room in disarray. However, the arrival of Michael Carrick completely changed the team’s trajectory.
The English coach stabilized the squad, restored competitiveness, and guided United to Champions League contention with a much more solid Premier League performance. His impact was immediate, and at Old Trafford there is already debate over whether he deserves to remain in charge beyond the summer.
Even so, Carrick himself acknowledged this week that his future is not guaranteed. The manager avoided revealing any hints about his plans, though he admitted the club must soon resolve the coaching situation: “I understand the question, I understand the moment. As far as I’m concerned, at this stage, the important thing is that the lads are in the right place to finish the season strong.”

He added that “clarity is important” now that Champions League qualification has been secured with three matches still to play: “Clarity is important, looking ahead. It comes at a time, at the end of the season, when we’ve finished well and put ourselves in a good position.”
“The situation of my role and what it will look like going forward, I think it’s a matter of natural timing. It’s always talked about towards the end of the season; the truth is not much has changed,” he concluded.
A potential Carrick exit could directly affect Marcus Rashford’s future. The English manager has been one of the forward’s biggest advocates in recent months, never closing the door on his return to Old Trafford. In fact, Carrick believes Rashford can still be important for United and has publicly insisted there is no definitive decision on his situation.

Carrick’s role is crucial because there is no consensus within the club regarding the English attacker. Part of the sporting directorate favors a definitive change of cycle and considers a summer sale a priority, especially given his high wages. In contrast, Carrick thinks Rashford can still rediscover his best form at Manchester and has positively evaluated his performances during his loan spell at Barcelona.
Meanwhile, the forward’s future at Barcelona remains uncertain. Although his numbers this season have been positive, the Catalan club still has doubts about exercising the €30 million purchase option. The Blaugrana are not fully convinced by his consistency or defensive contribution, and the sporting directorate is exploring younger, more affordable alternatives to strengthen the attack.
