Few forwards have been as decisive as Kvaratskhelia in the last two Champions League editions. The winger is in top form and on Wednesday in Munich will try to lead Paris Saint-Germain to their second consecutive Champions League final. Often compared to Maradona for his technique and aura during his Napoli days, the Georgian player’s idol actually has a Real Madrid background.
And it’s not Cristiano Ronaldo, Zinedine Zidane, or Karim Benzema. It’s Guti. As he confessed in a recent interview with DAZN, the former Spanish international midfielder was one of Kvaratskhelia’s idols, to the point where he played with a shirt that had Guti’s name written on it with a marker.
“When I was a child, I loved Guti. You know, I watched his matches and really liked the way he thought about the game, the passes he made… so he was my idol. I even had a shirt where I myself wrote ‘Guti’ with a marker and played with it. So yes, he was my idol and I respect him a lot,” said Kvaratskhelia.
Guti himself also confessed that he exchanged messages with the Georgian forward and even keeps a PSG shirt from him. “We’ve had good moments, I gave him one of my shirts, he gave me one of his that I have at home. We’ve been able to talk on Instagram, and I’m very happy with the progression he’s making. It was said that he could have come to Madrid or Barça. I think he’s a great player, very unbalanced with goals, and when he feels comfortable as he does at PSG, he’s a top player,” he summarized.
Kvaratskhelia’s class and technique sometimes remind of Guti, who during his time at Real Madrid became one of the most talented midfielders in the world. Now, the PSG winger, with goals and assists, has established himself as one of Europe’s most prolific forwards and aims to give the Parisian side a second Champions League title that would catapult him to a new dimension.
