According to German journalist Christian Falk, Bayern Munich’s internal analysis has determined that the current first-team squad depth is insufficient to meet the demands of top-tier European competition in the Champions League.
Falk reported that in recent days, club officials reached this conclusion after reviewing the squad’s capabilities. They cited the 2020 treble-winning season as a benchmark, noting that in the Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, Kingsley Coman could be replaced by Ivan Perišić, Serge Gnabry had Philippe Coutinho as a backup, and Thiago Alcântara had Corentin Tolisso waiting on the bench.
Under current manager Vincent Kompany, however, there are no substitutes of equivalent quality in key positions. This shortfall is why Bayern plans to make significant offensive reinforcements this summer, with Anthony Gordon identified as the top transfer target, along with another rotational option in attack.
Bayern were eliminated in the Champions League semi-finals this season, losing 6-5 on aggregate to Paris.
