The final score of 3–2 might suggest a tight, evenly matched derby between Corinthians and São Paulo on Sunday. In reality, the game was far from balanced.
Fernando Diniz’s team controlled their rivals from start to finish, generating plenty of offensive pressure while rarely being threatened defensively.
Both São Paulo goals came from Corinthians mistakes: the first came when Raniele lost possession trying to play out from the back, allowing Bobadilla to find Luciano free in the six‑yard box. The second was an own goal by Matheuzinho in the closing minutes.
Curiously, Raniele and Matheuzinho also had decisive roles in Corinthians’ victory and turned in strong performances overall. The midfielder opened the scoring, while the full‑back restored Corinthians’ lead early in the second half. Breno Bidon added the third goal.
Under Diniz, Corinthians now display a fresh tactical repertoire — more vertical attacking, quick passing exchanges, and greater offensive intensity. Another noticeable change is the stability of the starting lineup. Unlike under Dorival Júnior, the coach kept the same structure for the derby and only made substitutions in the 36th minute of the second half — something that seemed unlikely earlier in the season, when lack of physical sharpness was a major concern for the previous staff.
Corinthians return to action on Thursday against Barra, again at Itaquera, in the second leg of the Copa do Brasil fifth round. Having won the first leg 1–0, they need only a draw to advance.
