A British cricketer, Jamie Spence, has tragically died in a car accident in New Zealand alongside another man, French national Raphael Jean-Gabriel Roellinger. Jamie, aged 28, originally from Yorkshire, lost his life in the crash that occurred on April 29 near Kinleith on New Zealand’s North Island.
Jamie played for Hull Strikers, a local cricket club that described him as one of the most energetic and passionate members of the team. In a heartfelt tribute, the club said: “A true member of the Strikers family from the very beginning, Jamie was our youngest, yet one of the most energetic, fun-loving, and passionate souls on and off the field.” They also recalled how much he loved the club, stating: “His smile, his spirit, and his love for the game brought life to our club.”
Just days after his passing, Hull Strikers played their scheduled match against Hessle CC with only 10 players and won by seven runs. The team dedicated the victory to Jamie’s memory. The club noted that the loss had left “a void that can never truly be filled” and added: “He wasn’t just a player – he was one of the biggest supporters of this club, always bringing energy, passion, and a smile that lifted everyone around him.”
Jamie’s father, Jon, attended the game, which the club described as a special and emotional moment for everyone involved. The club ended its tribute with emotional words for their late teammate: “This victory is for you. There is no better tribute than giving everything out there, just like you always did. You’ll always be a part of this team. Forever a Striker.”
