The tension surrounding the arrival of the cruise ship MV Hondius in Tenerife on Sunday resulted in a tragic outcome. A 62-year-old Civil Guard officer died of a heart attack while assisting in the disembarkation of passengers at the port of Granadilla de Abona, Tenerife.
The officer, who served on the staff of the Tenerife Command, was on reserve duty at the operational command post. When he began feeling unwell, emergency protocols were immediately activated. Medical teams on the dock attempted to resuscitate him for 40 minutes, but were unable to save his life.
“The loss of another comrade in the line of duty. Another devastated family,” the professional association Jucil shared on social media.
The operation around the MV Hondius remained active after health authorities detected a hantavirus outbreak on board, prompting special containment and medical assistance protocols in Tenerife in the days leading up to the ship’s arrival. The vessel anchored early Sunday morning, and Spanish passengers spent their first night in isolation at the Gómez Ulla Defense Hospital in Madrid after being transferred under strict security measures.
